ACTION

HS Girls Volleyball

SUPERVISOR: Ms. Grajciarova

DATES OF ACTIVITY: From 1st September to 1st December 2012

PLAN:
I've never joined any sport team before because I had been doing swimming for the last eleven years. Swimming is more and less an individual sport, so I was looking forward to a change. Therefore, my main goal was to learn how to play volleyball!

  • To be more specific, I had the most problems with serving since I could not serve at all. Part of my plan therefore was to be able to serve underhand and do not miss any serve during the game. I wanted to develop new skills also in spiking and blocking because when you know how to do it correctly, then you can easily discourage your opponents and help your team to win a game. =  2. DEVELOPMENT OF NEW SKILLS

  • In order to achieve my goals, I intended to go to every single practice and be fully engaged in volleyball. I knew that the best way to improve my skills in spiking, serving and blocking was by both listening to what my coach was saying and observing other team players and that was exactly what I was planning to do. = 7. COMMITMENT TO ACTIVITIES

  • Besides that, I was also planning to be more engaged in collaboration with other team players because that's what team sports are all about. A real team spirit was something I really craved and hoped to experience! = 8. COLLABORATION WITH OTHERS

HOURS SPENT PERFORMING ACTIVITY: 25 hours (1 semester)

PLANNED EVIDENCE:
Photos of volleyball games and practices will serve as evidence.

ACTIVITY SELF-EVALUATION FORM TURNED IN?: Yes!

REFLECTION:
My team and I had volleyball practices every Monday and Wednesday plus our volleyball team participated in tournaments approximately every second week. During each practice we had enough time for practicing service which allowed me to improve in it and eventually I was able to serve underhand without missing any serve over the game.

  • Except the development of new skills, playing a volleyball gave me an opportunity to not only learn more about ethics in sports, but to follow and consider them throughout a game. Even though sometimes it was very tempting to foul another player, especially when we were losing, I never actually did it because I knew it was unethical and that we came there to play a fair game. = 5. CONSIDERATION OF ETHICS

  • It is also important to mention that playing volleyball played a significant role in raising awareness of my strengths and weaknesses. During the season I found out that thanks to my height and abilities I am a pretty good spiker, which I would never expect from me. = 3. INCREASED AWARENESS OF STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
Moreover, thanks to volleyball I have realized that being part of the game is much worthier than actually winning the game. What I really liked about volleyball was that  you had to learn how to cooperate with other team players in order to win. I was impressed when I saw how people in my team cheered up one girl who failed to block instead of judging her. Later even I learned, how to collaborate with others and started helping my team players when I saw that they needed it. Even though I fully showed commitment to volleyball and went to every single practice, I often felt like two practices a week were not enough for me and my team. Therefore, if I could continue with volleyball I would definitely practice more during my free time.

HS Girls Basketball

SUPERVISOR: Mr. Dougherty

DATES OF ACTIVITY: From 15th December 2012 to 15th March 2013

PLAN:
After my volleyball season I decided to continue playing team sports. I always found basketball very interesting, but to be honest, I never fully understood its rules.

  • My plan for basketball was pretty simple. Once again, to learn how to play it. I wanted to develop new skills not only in dribbling, but mainly in shooting. = 2. DEVELOPMENT OF NEW SKILLS
  • In order to do this, I decided to practice individually during my free time. I also suggested to my coach that we could be having some condition practices just to gain some muscle. = 7. COMMITMENT TO ACTIVITIES
  • Since I was afraid of the basketball at the beginning of the season, joining a team was certainly a new challenge for me which I decided to undertake. Therefore, one of my main goals was to become a confident, valuable basketball player and the only way I could I achieve that was by practicing and practicing. = 6. UNDERTAKING NEW CHALLENGES

HOURS SPENT PERFORMING ACTIVITIES: 25 hours (1 semester)

PLANNED EVIDENCE:  My team and I got many pictures from the tournaments in Austria and Hungary. I'm going to use them as evidence.

ACTIVITY SELF-EVALUATION FORM TURNED IN?: Yes!

REFLECTION:
Our basketball practices were every Monday and Wednesday. Since a good condition played a very important role in basketball, as a bonus, my team and I had condition practices twice a week too. We used to have a game at least once a week so it was pretty intense and time-consuming. The beginnings were quite difficult for me because I didn't understand the rules and therefore, felt a bit insecure during the first games. Because of that I was often sitting on a bench during a game instead of playing.

However, I did not want give up that easily, so I started practice even harder and asked questions when I was confused about something during the games. After a week or two, my shooting and dribbling skills started to develop which made me feel much more confident. I also became familiar with the rules and started to fully enjoy the game.

  • Eventually, not only I became an aggressive player who was particularly good at defense, but also one of the 5 start-players of every game. Thanks to basketball I became aware of my weaknesses and strengths which helped me grow as both a player and person. = 3. INCREASED AWARENESS OF STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

  • Aggressiveness is an undeniable part of basketball and that's why it is always very important to consider ethics while playing the game. Although in the heat of the game it might be sometimes pretty hard. That is why I really tried to play a fair game and during the whole season I fouled only 3 times. = 5. CONSIDERATION OF ETHICS

What I also have to admit is that I had a great team full of good basketball players and collaboration with them was certainly enjoyable.

  • At the beginning of the season, we were all kind of lost and did not know how to play together. However, as we got to know each other better and spent certain time together, we learned how to cooperate with each other in order to win. I knew  which team player I could count on and pass a ball to. = 8. COLLABORATION WITH OTHERS
Together with our wonderful coach, my team and I came with several interesting basketball strategies that helped us in beating our, often strong, opponents.

To conclude, I can say with satisfaction that I managed to accomplish everything I was originally planning to. However, there is always something I could improve on and therefore, my next goal could be to improve my skills in offense. This could be, in the future, achieved by shooting more baskets.

My team!
